Camdenton In August: What's Open, What's Under Construction, And Where To Spend A Saturday

The Square has felt like a construction zone for months, and it will feel like one for months more. That is the honest version of August 2026 in Camdenton. But underneath the orange cones, the town is quietly rearranging itself into something that works better for the people who live here year-round than the version that worked well enough when the summer crowd was doing most of the spending.

The Highway 54 Detour Is The Backdrop To Everything Else

The widening of Highway 54 from the Square west to the Niangua Bridge is the story that shapes every errand you run this month. The project will make serious headway in 2026 but will feel like more of a problem than a solution this year, and MoDot says the project won't be complete until 2027, when it will dramatically improve traffic flow through an historically congested area of Camdenton. MoDot Area Engineer Danny Roeger has told drivers to prepare to deal with the woes of road work.

Practical translation for August: give yourself an extra ten minutes for anything on the west side of town, and treat Business Route 5 as your friend rather than your fallback. The pain is finite. The payoff arrives next year.

What's New Since Memorial Day

Twisted Tony's, the Osage Beach sandwich shop that built a following on the Parkway, opened its Camdenton location at the end of last year. A hot spot in Osage Beach for sandwiches, Twisted Tony's opened its second location on Dec. 29, located behind Great Southern Bank across the Square. If you have not tried it yet, the second location is now a full year into being a normal option, not a novelty.

The bigger name shifts are still hints rather than headlines. City Administrator Jeff Hooker has said the lot next to US Bank has been purchased and the developer has been clearing a pad for construction, and dropped hints about development at Jack Crowell Road, which runs through the commercial center containing Culver's, Scooter's, and The Wash Shop, where some restaurants and a large retail nationwide grocer are under contract, though he was not yet able to reveal the names of those businesses. Read that as: the retail vacancy story that has hovered over the west side of town for a while is about to break, probably before this time next year. Watch that corridor.

The Community Center That Was Built For Locals, Not Tourists

The most consequential building in town this year is not a restaurant or a retail pad. It is the community center rising next to the Camdenton Aquatic Center in Camdenton Park.

The City cut the cost by moving the location to flatter ground, building one story instead of two thus eliminating elevators, and reducing the size by 8,000 sq. ft. The plan now is for a 14,000 sq ft community center, located next to the Camdenton Aquatic Center in the Camdenton Park, with a full-size gym, a full walking track, a reception area, and a large community room. The 150-person capacity community room will be available to rent and will offer a warming kitchen for caterers to bring food in for events. The City broke ground in August 2025, and Hooker said they hope to open by June 2026, adding, "It'll be the only thing like this in the Lake area."

Two things worth sitting with. First, the framing. Hooker did not pitch it as a tourism amenity. "We're gearing it toward people who actually live in the city, or this area," Hooker said. That's the tell for how the town is thinking about itself right now. Second, if you have kids in school sports or you rent a hall for family events, the math on where you spend money for those things is about to change.

Where To Actually Spend A Saturday In August

Zero plan, walkable from the Square. The Camden County Farmer's Market runs Saturdays 7 a.m. to noon at the Camden County Courthouse, 1 Court Circle NW. That's the weekend market. The bigger Wednesday market operates in a covered pavilion, so if the forecast turns, you have options both days.

Half a plan, mid-morning start. Drive the five miles to Ha Ha Tonka. Located just 5 miles from Camdenton's Town Square, Ha Ha Tonka State Park offers breathtaking scenery, hiking trails, castle ruins, and spelunking, and combines caves, a huge natural bridge, soaring bluffs, and one of Missouri's largest springs that helps feed the lake. Beginning June 18 and running through Aug. 1, the park offered Island Cave Adventure expeditions Thursdays through Saturdays at 10 a.m. That specific window closes at the start of the month, so if caves are on your list, call the park at 573-346-2986 to check what's still on the August calendar.

A real plan, tickets required. The Ozarks Amphitheater has a strong late-summer and early-fall run.

The amphitheater sits at 2367 N State Highway 5. If you have not been out there since the parking layout changed, budget the extra time.

The Wednesday Afternoon That Feels Like The Old Camdenton

If August 2026 has one anchor for residents, it is the Wednesday farmers market. Starting in 1985, the Farmers Market in Camdenton has been gathering farmers and purveyors with the areas' best ingredients, with fresh produce, fruits, meats and baked goods Missouri grown and made, usually within a 75 mile radius. The pavilion is located at 220 Rodeo Road, just south of the square across from the Library Community Gardens, and keeps customers and vendors shaded on hot days and dry on rainy days, running every Wednesday in May through at least the last one in September, from 3:00 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The lineup this year gives you an actual reason to plan the trip rather than swing through. Box Turtle Ranch brings garlic, more than twenty varieties of chili peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and eggs from ducks and chickens. Dry Ridge Farms has the ooey gooey butter cake, hot cross buns, cinnamon rolls, and pies. Firefly Valley Farms Coffee Roasters does small-batch artisan coffee. Coyote Creek Ranch raises Berkshire pigs, Nubian dairy goats, and Freedom Ranger chickens on regenerative pasture. Missouri Native Pecans sells the pecans in Cinnamon Roasted, Butter Roasted, Candied, Savory Spice Roasted, and Plain. Kendall Designs brings succulents, pottery, lavender, and blueberries.

That is a Wednesday errand list, not a photo op. If you have not been in a while, the roster has grown into something that can replace a real grocery run for produce and protein.

The First Weekend Of School

August 8 is the busy Saturday of the month. The Annual COMC KidPalooza Back to School Event runs Saturday, August 8, 2026, starting at 10 a.m., with giveaways, food trucks, resources and information, and more. It is a free event at Lake Regional Medical Center. If your kids are still shy about supplies and haircuts and backpacks, this is the one to put on the calendar.

The pattern of the last twelve months in Camdenton is not a growth story. It is a residency story. The community center, the second-location sandwich shop, the road that will actually move traffic in a year, the farmer's market that has been running since Reagan's second term — none of that is aimed at the boat crowd.
