St. Robert I-44 Construction Fall 2026: Lane and Ramp Dates

October 8, 2026

"The new, longer on-ramp from Business Loop 44 to westbound I-44 in St. Robert opened ahead of schedule today!" MoDOT added that line to its project page on June 24, 2026. The ramp had been closed since April 14 and wasn't supposed to reopen until mid-July.

The early finish set the tone for the summer. On August 6, both eastbound lanes on I-44 came back ahead of schedule after a three-week closure. Anyone who uses Exit 159 could fairly assume the rest of the project would wrap up early too.

It won't finish all at once. Per MoDOT's latest weekly report, the interstate work is scheduled to finish in late October. The eastbound ramp from I-44 onto Loop 44 at Exit 159 stays closed through mid-November. That gap covers Halloween and both Veterans Day events, so the climbing lanes will likely be open before the ramp into town is.

What The Project Is Actually Fixing

MoDOT's description of the project is about the hill. "The geography of Interstate 44 in Pulaski County at Roubidoux Creek often poses a problem for slower-moving vehicles," the project page says. The fix is a climbing lane in each direction so slow vehicles can work up the grade while other traffic keeps interstate speed, plus a longer westbound entrance ramp at Exit 159.

The work runs from just east of Exit 156 in Waynesville to Exit 159 in St. Robert. In December 2025, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $17,096,648.91 contract to Emery Sapp & Sons, Inc. The contractor could start January 5, 2026.

Most of the year's disruption came from carving lanes out of the hillside. Starting March 31, law enforcement ran rolling roadblocks on I-44 for rock blasting. The blasts were planned around 9 a.m. and could last up to 15 minutes each. During those windows, all eastbound ramps from Exit 150 to 159 and all westbound ramps from Exit 159 to 169 closed.

How The Year Went, Ramp By Ramp

The project has moved in stages, and each one changed a different part of the drive through town:

  • January 5, 2026: The contractor's notice-to-proceed date, the earliest work could begin.
  • March 31: Daily blasting roadblocks begin.
  • April 14: The westbound entrance ramp at Exit 159 closes for extension, with reopening planned for mid-July.
  • June 24: The longer westbound on-ramp from Business Loop 44 opens about three weeks early.
  • August 6: Both eastbound lanes return early after a three-week closure. The eastbound off-ramp at Exit 159 stays closed for later phases.
  • September 20: The second and final 21-day, around-the-clock eastbound lane closure begins between mile markers 159.4 and 160. Weather pushed it back from September 13.

Two things drew more than usual attention this time. MoDOT coordinated with local officials on the October 2 Waynesville Homecoming Parade, which closed Route 66 while the eastbound lane closure was in place. The City of St. Robert also posted the schedule change on its own site, which tells you how many local trips this closure affects.

Why The Ramp Date Moved

The forecasts haven't all agreed, and the newest one is the one to plan around. MoDOT's September 10 release said the lane closure, the Exit 159 eastbound ramp closure, and "major traffic impacts on the project" were expected to wrap up in early October 2026. The Central District's weekly report from September 25, covering September 25 through October 4, gives later dates.

Piece of the project Sept. 10 release Sept. 25 weekly report
Eastbound single-lane closure, MM 159.4–160 Early October Through mid-October
Eastbound I-44 ramp to Loop 44 at Exit 159 Early October Through mid-November
Overall project Major impacts wrap up early October Completion in late October 2026
Missouri Avenue pedestrian upgrades Not covered Completion in October 2026

As of the September 25 report, the lane closure was still listed as active. MoDOT hasn't announced that it has ended. A 21-day closure that started September 20 would run to about October 11, which fits "mid-October." Behind both dates sits the contract deadline. By contract, all work must be finished by July 1, 2027, or liquidated damages may be assessed. All MoDOT dates depend on weather and can change.

The ramp still closed leads off Exit 159 onto Loop 44, which MoDOT labels Historic Route 66. That's the road a lot of St. Robert uses as its address. Until mid-November, eastbound I-44 drivers headed there will need a different exit.

There's a second, smaller work zone in town. MoDOT is upgrading pedestrian facilities on Spur 44, also known as Missouri Avenue, from east of St. Robert Boulevard to Gateway Circle. The work brings temporary sidewalk closures and occasional single-lane closures with flaggers, and it's scheduled to finish in October 2026.

The Fall Calendar, Lined Up Against The Work Zone

Here's the town's fall schedule next to the road work, by date:

October 5 and 6. St. Robert's Fall Cleanup picks up at the curb on your normal trash day. The eastbound lane closure is still scheduled during these days.

October 9 and 10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Ladies of the Altar and Rosary Society hold their Ladies Annual Fall Sale in the basement of St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 367 Hwy 66. This also falls inside the 21-day closure.

October 14. The Waynesville–St. Robert Area Chamber of Commerce holds its monthly luncheon at Humboldt 1854 Event Venue.

October 17, 5 to 8 p.m. Faithful Fork hosts a Trunk or Treat at 1125 Route 66. If the lane closure ends in mid-October as scheduled, this may be the first event after it.

October 31, 5 to 9 p.m. Citywide trick-or-treating is Saturday night. The City set the hours after a community poll led by the mayor and published them September 21. That's after the project's late-October completion target but before the Exit 159 eastbound ramp is scheduled to reopen.

November 7, 11 a.m. The Veterans' Day Parade starts in the Waynesville Middle School parking lot, 1001 U.S. Route 66 W, and ends at Roubidoux Park. The Chamber and the Cities of St. Robert and Waynesville are involved. The park shares its name with the creek whose grade the new climbing lanes are built to handle.

November 11, 11 a.m. The Veterans' Day Ceremony is at the Waynesville High School Auditorium, with the Chamber and both cities inviting the community. One tourism calendar lists the ceremony on November 7. The City's October Chronicle and the Chamber both give November 11.

November 18. The Chamber's Friendsgiving luncheon is at The ARK Community & Sports Center. By then, the ramp should be back open if the mid-November date holds.

What's Open Along The Way

Several new businesses joined St. Robert during this phase of the project, and the City welcomed three of them in September posts:

  • Happy Nails and Spa, 240 Marshall Drive, Suite 13, is open seven days a week. The City welcomed it on September 4.
  • Lemon Spa, 690 Missouri Avenue, Suite 25, offers massage and spa services and is owned by Barry and Serena Malone. The City welcomed it on September 8. It sits on the same Missouri Avenue corridor as the pedestrian upgrades.
  • Puff 'N Pump, LLC, a gas station and convenience store at 1109 Old Route 66 owned by Khurera N. Iqbal, was welcomed on September 16.

Flo's 66 Diner at 1019 Old Route 66 isn't new. It opened August 16, 2020, and the City featured it in August. Puff 'N Pump and Flo's both list Old Route 66 addresses, the road MoDOT's closed ramp feeds into.

Keeping Up With The Dates That Move

MoDOT updates its Central District road report weekly. The September 25 edition is the latest one in our research. The I-44 Widening in Pulaski County project page is where MoDOT posted the June ramp update. For day-of conditions, MoDOT points drivers to its Traveler Information Map and its 24-hour Customer Service Center at 1-888-ASK-MoDOT, or 1-888-275-6636. The current timeline is lanes in mid-October, the full project in late October, and the Exit 159 eastbound ramp in mid-November. MoDOT will confirm each date when the work actually wraps.
